Deschutes Republicans Call for Abolishment of Flawed Wildfire Hazard Map

BEND, Ore. – At the Deschutes Republicans Central Committee meeting last Wednesday, members unanimously voted to issue a statement calling for the abolishment of the Wildfire Hazard Map created under SB 762.

Deschutes Republicans Chair Keith Rockow, a wildfire industry professional, presented the inconsistencies and unclear criteria used to classify properties as low, moderate, or high risk. Many attendees expressed deep frustration over the map’s inaccuracies and its potential impact on homeowners.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25th, concerned citizens from across the state will gather at the Capitol in Salem for a peaceful rally starting at noon. The purpose of the event is to send a strong message to legislators about the widespread frustration and opposition to the State Wildfire Hazard Map. The rally’s unified call to action: “Repeal the Map!”

As opposition grows across Oregon, legislators from both parties are recognizing the map’s flaws and are now joining efforts to repeal it. The Deschutes Republicans stand with Oregonians in demanding a more transparent and effective approach to wildfire risk management.

Property owners who wish to appeal their wildfire risk classification can find the necessary form and instructions at Oregon Department of Forestry’s website
